Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an English biologist, geologist & naturalist, who formalized the theory of evolution, which is now considered an essential concept in the scientific world. Taken from a page in his notebook from around July 1837, this diagram was Darwin’s very first formalization for the idea of an evolutionary tree, with the iconic phrase “I think” scrawled atop the sketch.
