Guy Fawkes (1570-1606) was an English soldier and revolutionary. A devout Catholic who lived in England after the advent of Protestantism, he and other members of the English Catholic Rebellion used stockpiles of gunpowder in an attempt to blow up the House of Lords. They wanted to assassinate King James VI & I and the entire House of Parliament with the goal of reinstating a Catholic Monarch. Infamously known as the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, the plan failed when an anonymous letter compromised them, leading the authorities to arrest Fawkes who was caught guarding the explosives. Sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered, Fawkes fell off the scaffolding and broke his neck, avoiding his agonizing fate with a quick death. The Rebellion ended, but every November 5th, the UK celebrates Guy Fawkes Day, keeping his intriguing legacy as "the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions".
