Las Meninas  or The Ladies-in-waiting is a 1656 painting by Diego Velázquez. One of the most important & widely analyzed works in Western art. The complex composition raises questions about reality and illusion, creating an uncertain relationship between the viewer and the figures depicted. King Philip IV & his Queen look out of a mirror, being painted by Velázquez himself, working on a large canvas, while Princess Margaret Theresa is shown surrounded by maids of honour, 2 dwarfs and a dog. Currently housed at the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain.
