Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772-1833) was an Indian socio-religious reformer, activist, scholar and author, best known as the founder of the Brahmo Sabha. Given the title of “Raja” for his achievements by Mughal Emperor, Akbar II, he is often called the “Father of Modern India” for having a profound effect on the country through reforms in politics, society, education and religion. As the primary opponent of archaic practices like sati, child marriage, women being prohibited from inheriting property & the caste system, he fought hard until they were all illegal and abolished. Mohan Roy believed in interfaith peace, promoting coexistence and the freedom for all to practice their religions in harmony. Though often mentioned only as a short footnote in textbooks today, Raja Ram Mohan Roy is one of the single greatest Indians to have ever existed and selflessly helped usher the country into a new, modern era of enlightenment.
