Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949) was an Indian political activist and poet. Known as the “Nightingale of India”, Naidu was an accomplished & influential poet who used her voice and reach to further the causes she believed in — women’s rights, civil rights, anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism. Naturally drawn to Gandhi’s idea of swaraj, she was a key voice in the Indian Independence movement. She became the President of the Indian National Congress in 1925 and Governor of the United Provinces of India from 1947 to 1949, not only as the first woman to hold that office, but also leading the country right after independence through its most tumultuous time until a constitution was established and the Republic of India was officially formed. She is a paragon of India’s rich values and one of its most beloved & significant leaders of all time.
