Launched in 1957, Sputnik I was the first artificial satellite. Launched by the Soviet Union, this satellite was the very first man-made object in space. It actively orbited the Earth for three weeks after which its battery died and it stayed up in space for another two months before it fell back into the Earth’s atmosphere and on its surface. One of the most significant technological achievements of all time, this satellite was also the spark that kicked off the incredibly intense Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union, which led to the former successfully sending humans to the moon in just another 10 years.
