World War I, also known as “The Great War” was an international conflict that set the world alight from 1914 to 1918. It all began with the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princep, a Bosnian Serb Yugoslav nationalist, an event which ripped Europe and eventually the world apart into factions and alliances consisting of over 100 countries at war with each other. With over 22 Million military and civilian deaths, it is one of the most destructive chapters in human history, with severe social, cultural, economic and geopolitical consequences. It led only to an era of enforced, temporary peace at the hands of the Treaty of Versailles that was underlined by brooding hostilities which revealed themselves violently 20 years later as World War II.
