A rendition of his own studio in the year 1909, Matisse bathed the entire canvas in a single bold shade of red, before excavating details out of it using yellow lines to outline the different objects in the room and filling them in with equally bright, contrasting colours. The imperfect skewing of objects in this originally nondescript space also creates an immersive yet uncanny 3 dimensionality that begs a second glance every single time.
