The Laughing Cavalier is often seen as "one of the most brilliant of all Baroque portraits”. It was titled by the Victorian press and public, when it first exhibited at the Bethnal Green Museum in 1872. The subject is not laughing, but sports a hint of a smile, which is exaggerated by his large, upturned moustache. The painting is lively and excruciatingly detailed, with the figure’s complex fabrics and embroidery rendered to perfection. It is currently housed in the Wallace Collection in London, UK.
