Considered an influential masterpiece of Modern Art today, this French painting was the pariah of the Parisian art scene when it was first displayed. Depicting a rural picnic between two men & two women, it became notorious for having one of those women completely nude, which harshly juxtaposed classical style nudity against a modern, bourgeois setting, something that was so unreal to the public that it was instantly deemed obscene & tasteless. However, Manet’s non-conformism and establishment of a new bar for freedom & representation went on to be a turning point for modern artists in Western Art. Now housed at the Musée d'Orsay, in Paris, France.
