Currently held in a private collection, this Belgian surrealist work is one of Western Art’s most peculiar self-portraits. Set against a vibrant blue background, Magritte looks on at the viewer sadly as his nose distends downwards straight into his smoking pipe, implying the severe degree of his addiction to the substance, while a limp candle lights the scene, wrapping around a small round table. There is a heavy air of melancholy to this painting which hints at the intense self-flagellation Magritte seems to be engaging in.
