IND ₹1999 / US $40 / UK £30 / EU €35 Hieronymus Bosch |
Now housed at The Louvre in Paris, France, this Dutch painting is part of a massive triptych that was cut up and divided. The many elements of this painting include a man vomiting off the side of the boat, two men overboard, a boatman using a ladle as an oar, a nun and a friar performing songs on a lute and right at the top of the mast, sits an owl, which in medieval times was the symbol for bad luck. The depiction is of a group of fools adrift aimlessly at sea, still somehow eating and drinking excessively while ignoring the men overboard. They lack morals and direction despite the presence of the church (the nun & the friar).
