Currently exhibited at the Iglesia de Santo Tomé in Toledo, Spain, this painting has been hailed as a masterpiece of Western Art and one of the most important pieces of Spanish Art of all time. Based on the popular folk tale about the generous Count of Orgaz, it portrays his funeral when Saint Stephen & Saint Augustine are said to have descended from the heavens to bury him in front of a stunned crowd as a reward for living a virtuous life. With no separation between heaven and earth, both visually and thematically, many aspects of the entire composition melt into one another,  seeming to take place in one long, surreal space.
