Created by the French master Cézanne, this painting is the final in a series of five that depict French peasants playing cards with each other. In the series, the subjects are solemn with their eyes down focusing on the game, which contrasted with a motif of Dutch and French genre paintings that always depicted card games as wild, drunken gambles played in taverns. In contrast, Cézanne’s figures feel meditative and timeless, lacking any drama, story or characterization. The later paintings in the series also feature no money on the table and untouched wine bottles. All of this added up the one critic describing this series as “human still-life”. This painting is exhibited at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France.
