Now at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, this Italian work is a masterpiece of visual storytelling by one of the great masters of Western Art, Caravaggio. The painting depicts a card game between two young boys. While one is well-dressed and unassuming, the other, a “cardsharp”, hides extra cards under his belt which are hidden from his opponent. He also has a dagger on his side while a suspicious older man with tattered gloves stares into his opponent’s card, signalling him. This combination of street life realism with exquisite artistic technique makes The Cardsharps a seminal work of the Renaissance era.
