Now at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France, this masterpiece of French Realism is noble in both form and intent. This sober yet elegant painting empathetically portrays three peasant women hard at work, collecting leftover wheat after a harvest. Revealed to the public just a few years after the French Revolution of 1948, it was viewed very negatively by the middle and upper classes as it reminded them of the harsh, unfair labor endured by the working classes that had mobilized French society to the point of uprising. The painting is also incredibly large, 84cm by 112cm, normally reserved for mythical or religious subjects, which made the upper classes feel like Millet was further glorifying the entire lower-class of workers.
