Now at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, this Belgian painting is one of the most celebrated surrealist artworks of all time. Depicting a man and a woman in an intimate embrace, it shows them kissing but adds a sense of tension & mystery by making them kiss through white veils. The artist creates the mood of an ideal kiss but subverts our expectations by masking the two people and leaving the kiss incomplete. Covered faces, masks & disguises were also a popular theme in surrealism, since it let artists express their questions about what truly lies beneath the surface of the things we can see with our eyes.
