Currently on permanent loan to the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, this masterpiece of the Baroque era was created by the Dutch master, Rembrandt. It portrays the Captain and Lieutenant of Amsterdam’s citizen militia in sharp focus walking in front of their men, while additional focus is placed on a girl carrying the militia’s goblet and a dead chicken, which has been seen to represent a defeated enemy. This painting is famous for being absolutely huge at about 11 feet x 14 feet, making the figures in the painting almost life-size and for its masterful use of the chiaroscuro style of lighting.
