Housed in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, this masterpiece of Surrealism by the great Salvador Dalí is one of the most recognizable and iconic pieces of Western Art. Portraying a collection of pocket watches melting away, many have interpreted this painting to portray the impermanence and decay of something as eternal as time itself. Some even believe this to be a comment on the relativity of space as well, pointing towards Einstein’s theory of special relativity. When asked about this, Dalí simply said that the clocks were inspired by when he once observed a block of cheese melting in the sun.
