A dramatic masterpiece by one of the great masters of Western Art, Rembrandt, this Dutch painting depicts a biblical scene — the miracle of Jesus calming the Sea of Galilee during a violent storm. Hailed for its excellent use of high contrast to create a visceral moment of divine tension, the painting is unfortunately better known for being stolen in the biggest art theft in American history. Previously housed at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, it was stolen in 1990 along with 12 other works by two thieves disguised as policemen and has never been seen since.
