Now housed at the Wallace Collection in London, this French painting is considered to be a masterpiece of the Rococo era and Fragonard’s magnum opus. A meticulously detailed yet light-hearted scene, it features a sophisticated young lady on a swing, being propelled by an older man who is almost completely hidden in the shadows behind her. Out of his view and to the front of the lady swinging, sits a smiling young man, right below her flowing skirt. As the lady swings carefree, bathed in warm sunlight & kicking off her left shoe into the air unconcerned, this entire scene radiates all the finesse and artistry of the great masters, except with rare childlike innocence & joy that is uncommon in the Western Art tradition.
