Often believed to be the final self-portrait by the Dutch master Van Gogh, this iconic painting was sold to a private collector in 1998 for $71.5 Million ($114 Million, inflation adjusted), making it one of the most expensive paintings of all time. Van Gogh’s financial inability to hire models and desire to paint people led to him producing about 36 self-portraits over his life. Despite its obvious brilliance of form, control of colour and incredible expressiveness, this is a melancholy image like many of his other self-portraits, and depicts the artist looking timid under the heavy burden of his mental health disorders.
