James Abbott McNeill Whistler is a painting of a painter, by a painter, for a painter, who was vastly displeased by the effort. Travelling to Spain via London, William Merritt Chase, an American artist decided to meet the famous expat American artist James McNeill Whistler, whom he admired. Whistler proposed that they do portraits of each other. Chase depicted Whistler as the latter had others; in dark colours, with loose brushwork, and as a long figure in a vague space. Apparently, Whistler was so affronted by Chase’s effort at this homage to his own style, he called the work a “monstrous lampoon”. It is believed that he destroyed his own portrait of Chase. This artwork is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
