Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1, best known as Whistler's Mother, is a painting of Anna McNeill Whistler, the mother of American-born painter James McNeill Whistler. Created in oils on canvas by him in 1871, while living in London with her at Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. The rather large portrait is 56.81 by 63.94 inches and is displayed in a frame designed by Whistler himself. It is one of the most famous works by an American artist outside the United States. It has been described as a Victorian Mona Lisa. The painting is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, since being purchased by France in 1891.
